On Thursday evening it was somewhat bizarre to hear talk of “green jackets” in November and to see aerial shots of Augusta National dominated by autumnal hues, since The Masters traditionally heralds the beginning of the golf season, however 2020 has been a year like no other. It was lovely to see Ken Brown back with his “Ken on the course” antics, using footballs and other props to emphasise the ridiculous slopes of the Augusta greens that aren’t obvious on our TV screens. I find Ken entertaining and informative, however I wasn’t aware of his rich golfing history until a few years ago. After beating Sandy Lyle by two shots to win the English Boys’ Amateur he represented England Schools along with Nick Faldo and Lyle. In his professional career he won the 1987 Southern Open on the PGA Tour and won four times on the European Tour. He played in five Ryder Cup matches matches between 1977 and 1987 and competed in The Open Championship 14 times. He made it to Augusta too, finishing in 36th place in The Masters in 1988.
While looking for some “Ken on the course” clips I came across this video of Ken’s “Ultimate Putting Tips”. Whilst he unashamedly advertises the new edition of his book, “One Putt – The Ultimate Guide to Perfect Putting” several times, he makes a number of surprisingly simple observations about different styles of putter and provides the golfer with some pointers for improving their action with the shortest club in the bag.
If you’re interested in Ken’s book, here it is…
